There is a switch on the device to change the direction of the impedance matching, meaning the transformer can be used in the opposite direction.
Plug a Microphone into a guitar amp and you will not hear tthe mic the level will be to low. Typically it would be used to plug a microphone (low impedance device) into a guitar amplifier (high impedance / Hi-Z input). If you attempt such a connection without using such a device, the output signal from the amp will be much lower.
