My goal was to get an amp that I could play in small venues and that had a versatile tone selection and overdrive so it could be played by itself without any foot-pedal or effects units if need be. I've never had a Crate before and never gave any thought to owning one. Previously I owned Marshall and Fender amplifiers and when it came to keyboard amp my friend at the music store pointed me to Crate and told me 〝it’s the same guy from Fender then Music Man and now he is Crate〞Crate Music Company
I was pretty set on the Music Man Amps. when I walked into the store that day and he already had the Korg M1 plugged into the Crate and I have to state right here that this is the loudest and most versatile tone-wise of any amp I've had. And it absolutely slays any other amp that I put it against, both in volume, clean tone, and outrageous gain. In fact, I'm hard pressed to come up with any other amp that does a better job, with the exception of my old blackface Fender Super Reverb.
The Crate has 4 channels, very clean robust sound, each channel has a red overload lights that I adjust to blink every once in a while, and separate reverb controls for each channel (nice touch). It runs on solid state amplifier with sparkling crystals highs and a very wide overall tone, nice vibrant bass . Turning up the preamp gain supercharges my 72 Stratocaster into the heavens (overdrive heaven that is).
All four channels are clean and sparkles with width, breadth, and shimmer. There is also a lot of mid-range and bass available on the amp. This amp really outdoes a lot of other amps with the tone variations available on the top panel. A lot of other amps I compared it to (Peavey Delta Blues, Laney VC30, Tech 21 Trademark 60, Vox Cambridge), all came out a distant 2nd in comparison and gain-wide the Crate absolutely blew them out of the room. Don't be misled, while Crate has a pretty bad reputation, the XL series amps are top-notch as a fraction of the cost of other amps.
Built like a Mac-truck, this is one heavy amp, heavy speaker, heavy construction, A blazing 160 watt monster full tone unit with a 15" 2.5" voice coil, and 56 oz. magnet speaker and horn that will have your other fellow keyboardist drooling with envy and incredulous that you are playing a Crate amp!
Features:
1. INSERT JACK: A stereo "Y" type cord may be patched into the K I 60XL through this jack. The tip of the plug will be the line out; the ring will be the line in; and the sleeve will act as ground between the two.
2. 4 10db INPUT JACK: This input accepts standard 1/4" phone plugs, and Is three times more sensitive than the 0db Inputs (8). This greater sensitivity makes It suitable for low level signals from pianos, as well as high level output from synthesizers.
3. GAIN CONTROLS: Each channel has its own gain control, which sets the amount of gain for the channel.
4. PEAK INDICATOR LEDS: When this LED is illuminated, the input stage of the corresponding channel is within 10db of clipping. To avoid this, reduce the gain of the channel.
5. REVERB/EFFECTS SEND CONTROLS: This control is used to set the desired amount of reverb, as well as the amount of signal sent to the Effects Out jack (16) for each channel.
6. LOW CONTROLS: Channels 1 and 2 are equipped with a Low control, with which the "bottom," or bass, may be increased or decreased.
7. HIGH CONTROLS: The amount of treble, or "high end," for channels 1 and 2 may be controlled with this knob.
8. 0db INPUT JACKS: These channel 3 and 4 input jacks accept standard 1/4" phone jacks, and are suitable for a signal source from synthesizers.
9. MASTER EQUALIZATION: This seven band graphic equalizer enables you to shape the tonality of the K160XL to suit room acoustics. Frequencies from 63Hz to 8kHz may be boosted by moving the sliders up, or cut by moving the sliders down.
10. EO PEAK INDICATOR LED: This LED will illuminate whenever the Master Equalization section is within 10db of clipping. To avoid clipping, reduce the amount of EQ boost or channel gain.
11. LINE OUT LEVEL CONTROL: This Line Out section is a post-EQ and pre-master circuit which provides both an unbalanced and balanced output. The Line Out Level control will adjust the amount of gain for both output jacks, and is independent of the Master Volume control.
12. UNBALANCED LINE OUT: This jack is a high impedance line output which will accept standard 1/4" phone plugs, and is suitable for connecting the K160XL to another amplifier, tape deck, etc.
13. BALANCED LINE OUT: A low impedance balanced output, for connection to an external amplifier or mixer with balanced inputs, is available at this jack.
14. LOW Z INPUT: This jack will accept a low impedance balanced input, such as a microphone, and may be used in conjunction with the High Z input.
15. HIGH Z INPUT: Channel 2 is also provided with this 0db high impedance balanced input jack. It is suitable for a signal source from synthesizers.
16. EFFECTS LINE OUT: This jack, when used in conjunction with the Effects Line In jack, provides a pre-EQ effects loop. The pre-EQ circuitry reduces the unwanted noise associated with most external effects devices. This output can be connected to the line input of your external effects device.
17. EFFECTS LINE IN: This jack can be connected to the line output of your external effects device.
18. EFFECTS RETURN CONTROL: This knob is a master control for the effects loop, with which you can increase or decrease the amount of effect desired.
19. REVERB FOOTSWITCH: This jack may be used to connect the Reverb Master circuit to a footswitch on/off unit.
20. REVERB RETURN: This knob acts as the reverb master control.
21. MASTER VOLUME CONTROL: The total output level of the K160XL is controlled by this knob.
22. LIMIT INDICATOR LED: When the limiting circuitry is activated, this LED will be illuminated. (The Limit circuit prevents the amplifier from clipping, or distorting). Also, the LED indicates when the maximum undistorted power available has been attained. It is normal for this LED to flicker on and off; however, it should not illuminate constantly. If it does so, reduce the Master Volume control.
23. PRE-MASTER LINE OUT AND LINE IN: These two jacks form a Pre-Master circuit, which can be used as an extra effects loop, etc., thus adding to the versatility of the K160XL. The Line Out jack should be connected to the input of the external device; and the Line In jack should be connected to the output of the external device.
24. POWER INDICATOR LED: This LED will be illuminated whenever the unit is on.
25. POWER SWITCH: Depressing the power switch to the down position will turn the unit on.
